19th Century French Perigord Walnut Armoire
19th Century French Perigord Armoire made of solid walnut and veneers of walnut with pine as a secondary wood. The door has marquetry inlaid architectural details with three dimensional hand-carved accents including a branch of walnuts in the center and a winged putti at the top. Flanked by boldly carved vertical columns featuring overlapped scales, a repetitive stacked pattern that adds textural contrast. Original iron hardware includes a serrure en appliqué, or central box lock, with multi-bolt mechanism, long-strap hinge mounts, and escutcheon, all with ornate openwork and engraved details. Large hand- forged key with heart shaped, open-scroll design. The interior provides ample storage with two adjustable shelves. Large dovetailed drawer in the bottom plinth. Crown has a heavily molded cornice with a gadroon motif that catches the light and frames the top of the cabinet. Waxed finish. Circa 1870-1890. In three parts. Small trim missing near escutcheon.
