18th Century Italian Baroque Cassone or Chest
A fine 18th century Italian Rennaissance style Baroque cassone, or marriage chest, made of solid walnut. Bold details are hand carved in high relief and include a central panel with rosettes, scrolled acanthus leaf corners, dentil decoration along the top and bottom and lion paw feet. The top is made from a single thick plank of walnut. Iron hinges and lock but no key. Beautiful dark waxed patina. Interior is lined with old floral printed paper, added at a later date. In very good original condition. Perfect for use as a bench in an entryway or at the foot of a bed. An essential piece of furniture, a marriage or hope chest was a common bridal gift , used to store clothing, precious fabrics and other valuables.
