French Empire Miniature Semainier Chest, Walnut & Brass, Circa 1800
An early 19th century French Empire Period miniature semainier chest finished in rich matched flame walnut veneers. Designed with seven dovetailed drawers (one for each day of the week) with shield-shaped bronze lock escutcheons and simple circular pull knobs. The top frieze drawer is subtly integrated directly into the upper molding crown. Achitectural style defined by straight masculine lines, inspired by ancient Greek and Roman design elements. Detached turned tapered solid walnut columns with gilded bronze ormolu mounts featuring classical ring capitals and bases. Block plinth feet. No key and top drawer missing a lock. These miniature chests were historically crafted as a meuble de maîtrise by a guild apprentice to demonstrate technical proficiency, or used as a traveling salesman's sample.
