Louis XV Commode Sauteuse with Marquetry and Turquin Marble, c. 1750

$12,500.00

A fine 18th century French Louis XV Period marquetry commode sauteuse with a gentle serpentine curved front, slightly bowed sides, and a scalloped lower apron that flows seamlessly into slender, out-turned cabriole legs. A commode sauteuse is a specific type of antique French chest of drawers characterized by its relatively low height and a distinct two-drawer structure set on long, elevated legs. The term comes from the French verb sauter ("to leap"). Because of its two-tiered design and raised legs, it appears light and lifted off the floor, avoiding the bulky, heavy look of traditional, floor-hugging chests. The exterior is decorated with intricate geometric parquetry and marquetry panels. Warm, contrasting tones of cherry, mahogany and walnut create a vibrant finish. Retaining a good French polish finish. The dovetailed drawers have old paper-lined interiors. Finely cast gilt- bronze (ormolu) hardware accentuates the key lines of the piece with stylized leaf motifs on the corner posts. The drawers have ornate scrolling rococo loop handles. Protective bronze sabots cap the front feet. Locks are present, but there is no key. The top is fitted with a beautiful 1.5" thick slab of grey and white veined Turquin marble, the edge custom cut with a deep groove ogee profile to match the chest's curved silhouette. Good craftsmanship with dovetailed joints. Excellent condition with minor veneer missing on the bottom edge. Great proportions. An elegant example of mid-18th century European cabinetmaking. All original. Circa 1760-1770
Dimensions: 35"H x 49.5"W x 24"D
