19th Century French Louis XIII Revival Barley Twist Column Pedestal
$850.00
A late 19th Century French Louis XIII Revival barley twist column pedestal made of dark stained solid beech wood. Deep, broad turned torsades (spirals) with pronounced gadroon, or large bulbed protrusion, near the bottom. A direct nod to 17th century French architectural pillars. Manufactured during the Belle Epoque when historicism was highly fashionable. Low square base features slight cut-outs on the bottom face, creating very subtle bracket feet at the four corners. Pillar is attached to the base with a large wood screw. Exceptionally smooth luster and rich medium brown tone. A nice plant stand for ferns or orchids, or for the display of a sculpture. Circa 1880-1900
