A 19th century French glazed terracotta Toupin pot with distressed, speckled terracotta glaze and yellow glazed interior. A Toupin is a utilitarian earthenware or terracotta cooking pot characterized by its bulbous, rounded belly, side loop handles and a distinct hollow lateral handle that doubles as a pouring spout. Historically used since at least the 16th century, these pots were placed directly over hot ashes or embers near a fireplace hearth to slowly simmer and keep soups, sauces, milk, or regional specialties warm without drying them out.
