Julius Paulsen Danish Painting Oil on Canvas Framed
A small painting by Danish artist Julius Paulsen (1860-1940) depicting a nude woman emerging from a wooded forest, her feet in a small stream or pond. As Paulsen evolved, his style drifted into Symbolism. He frequently painted figures dancing or idling in dimly lit, ethereal forests. which strongly evoke the mood of pagan nymphs or classical woodland myths. Julius Paulsen was born in Copenhagen and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He was a highly respected Danish academic painter and professor, best remembered for his masterfully executed portraits, atmospheric landscapes, and groundbreaking work introducing the female nude. He was deeply inspired by Rembrandt and absorbed the techniques of Monet and Courbet, utilizing looser, sketchy brushmarks and a vibrant play of ambient light. His vast body of work uniquely balances Realism, Symbolism, and Impressionism.
