A suberb 18th century Italian Rennaissance style Baroque cassone, or marriage chest, made of solid walnut. Rich, intricate hand-carved architectural details with repeating arched motif and incised decorated panels. Front right panel opens to reveal three dovetailed drawers with inlaid marquetry detail and brass knobs. Working lock and key. Resting on sculptural lion paw feet. The top is made from two thick planks of walnut. Waxed patina. In good original condition. Perfect for use as a bench in an entryway or at the foot of a bed. An essential piece of furniture, a marriage or hope chest was a common bridal gift used to store clothing, precious fabrics and other valuables. Circa 1700-1730
