19th Century French Empire Miniature Walnut Commode Circa 1800-1820
A fine early 19th century French Empire miniature sample commode crafted of solid and veneer of walnut with deep, striking grain patterns. Four dovetailed drawers (three lower exposed drawers and a concealed top drawer) with book matched veneer face, framed by elegant turned columns. Cast brass button knobs and shield shaped escutcheons with faux keyholes. French polish finish. Excellent quality. Often called an apprentice or "sample" piece (maîtrise), these high-quality miniatures were built by 19th century craftsmen to demonstrate mastery over complex veneer techniques or to showcase furniture designs to wealthy clients before committing to full-sized builds. Perfect for storing treasured objects or for use as a jewelry box or men's valet. Circa 1800-1820
