Pair of Louis XV Style Walnut Commodes, Serpentine Front, 1980s
A Vintage pair of Louis XV-style Provençal walnut chest of drawers or commodes handcrafted in the 1980s in a true-to-18th-century traditional French Louis XV style. These distinctive chests are typical of the Nîmes or Rhône Valley regions of southern France. Classic sauteuse design with two deep, wide dovetailed drawers raised on tall cabriole legs. Serpentine front with deeply carved pierced apron with openwork stylized shell, acanthus leaves, and scroll motifs. Cast bronze drawer pulls and decorative shield escutcheons provide functional ornamentation. Excellent reproductions with good craftsmanship using pegged construction and thick planks of solid walnut. The finish shows variation between the two chests, with one slightly darker than the other and a top that was refinished, as found. Circa 1980s.
