19th Century French Terra Cotta Roof Finials or Garden Ornaments

$6,000.00

A pair of 19th century terracotta decorative roof finials from a French chateau. Included are two tall architectural spires and two salvaged ornamental fleur-de-lis from the roof's ridge. In very good condition with nice old patina and remnants of dark moss. Excellent for use as sculptural elements in the garden. Some losses and one finial has a repaired crack near the base. Impressive scale with nicely cast stacked elements. These clay ornaments, known as épis de faîtage, were originally meant to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Over time, they became highly decorative and could signify a homeowner's social status, wealth, or profession. Circa 1880-1900.
