A fine 18th c. Italian cassone, or large chest, made of solid walnut. Bold details are hand-carved in high relief and include a central crest, a pair of caryatids on the corners, dentil decoration along the top and bottom and large lion paw feet. Lock and key are in working order. The top and back are made from thick single planks of walnut. Beautiful waxed patina. In excellent condition with only minor restoration on back corners of lid. Circa 1740-1760. An essential piece of furniture, a marriage or "hope chest" was commonly given to the bride by her parents as a wedding gift and placed in the bridal suite.
