Large French Nevers Faience Ewer & Base

2,500.00

A magnificent large French faience ewer with matching base, by Gabriel Montagnon at the Montagnon factory in Nevers. Circa 1899. This is an exceptional example of the artist's use of powerful Baroque shapes: the ewer has a pinched neck and exaggerated lip with a dragon handle and a goat mask. Both the base and the pitcher have beautiful pictorial scenes derived from 16th and 17th century engravings. Vivid colors of blue, yellow and green. It is rare to find a ewer of this large size with its matching base. A lovely collector's item. Excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Please note the minor firing fissure on the dragon's neck. Ewer: 21"h x 11w x 8"d 10lbs. Platter: 16" diameter x 2"h 6 lbs.
