A large early 19th century French terracotta pottery biot jar in classic shape and having a lovely aged patina with remnants of old yellow glaze. Hand formed using the ancient technique of rope thrown pottery, these jars were used to preserve and transport olive oil and were produced in the village of Biot, in Provence. There are three small drainage holes at the base, but as it was not originally made for use as a planter, there is no drainage hole in the bottom. 29.5"H x 23" diameter. Neck has a 15" diameter opening. Weight: 102 lbs.
