French Scriban Bibliotheque

An early 20th c. French scriban bibliotheque, made of solid cherry wood with veneer of cherry used as a decorative element on the face of the drawers. From the Loire Valley, this secrétaire was custom built and has several secret compartments. The abattant, or slant front desk, hinges open to reveal a leather writing surface, six dovetailed drawers. and a small center cabinet. The bottom has two hidden drawers that pull out from the sides, two cabinets, each with an adjustable shelf, and a row of three dovetailed drawers, the top one being a false drawer that is accessed via a secret door on the inside of the right cabinet. The bookcase above is lined in burgundy velvet and has a single dovetailed drawer and eight removable shelves that can be configured to accommodate different size books and collectibles. The clock has a power mechanism and is in working condition. All locks are in working order with four keys. Excellent craftsmanship. Circa 1900-1920. Overall: 86"h x 52.5"w x 19.5"d. Top" 46"h x 51"w x 9"d. The interior depth of the shelves is 6.5"d. When abattant is open: 32.5"d x 30"h.
